Notes on Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian
Following are a few websites that have useful information on Sima Guang’s Zizhi Tongjian:* www.cuhk.edu.hk/ics/journal/summaries/number7/Ho%20Koon-piu.htm–
{contains comments on Qing imperial interest in Zizhi tongjian & Zizhi tongjian gangmu}
* www.chinaknowledge.de/Literature/Historiography/zizhitongjian.html –
{historical summary of the Zizhi Tongjian}
* links.chinahistoryforum.com/searchresult.php?sbcat_id=80–
{highly valuable site for all sorts of Chinese information, including historical sources available on the Net}.
It may also be worth pointing out that electronic versions of ZZTJ are available on the net (in the original classical Chinese), as are dictionaries that can be of great help in at least providing core meanings of individual characters. One method of using such dictionaries is to display the text and copy/paste a character to be looked up into the dictionary. This approach is hardly erudite or elegant, but it is a start and is surprisingly efficient as far as it goes. My thanks in advance to any reader who might care to inform us of a better method - such as a specific dictionary designed for classical Chinese or an extant glossary for the ZZTJ.
